CHAPTER 14
THE INVESTIGATIVE COMMITTEE RECONVENES
âThat was bloody marvelous,â Mellie said once we were in a taxi winging our way back to the Ritz.
I was surprised by her salty language. Had she picked that up from Hollingsworth or my brother Richard? Regardless, I had to acknowledge her praise. âThank you.â
âYou have a gift for asking the right questions. Not only that, you were ruthless in there.â
I smiled at her evaluation. Still, I had to clear it up. âI prefer relentless. Unfortunately, one often has to be to get answers. Much too often, people have secrets they donât wish to reveal. So I have to press them on it.â
âShe lied to you at the end when she said she didnât know why Jacques wanted her husbandâs company.â
I turned to her with a grin. âVery good, Mellie. Yes, I thought the same.â
âWhy would she lie about it?â
âTo protect someone, probably her daughter. Weâll need to find out.â I glanced at the driver who seemed to be following our conversation with avid interest. Strange. We were speaking in English, not French. Hoping she got the message, I squeezed Mellieâs hand and nodded toward him. âLet us enjoy the sights of Paris in silence the rest of our trip.â
She inclined her head in understanding. Not another word was spoken the rest of our ride.
Neither Robert nor Hollingsworth had returned to the Ritz by the time we arrived. So Mellie and I decided to enjoy our luncheon at one of the hotel restaurants, the Bar Vendôme, where we could enjoy cocktails along with our food. Our plates of ham and brie sandwiches had just been served when Robert showed up. Weâd left him a note in our suite to inform him of our whereabouts. It didnât take long for Hollingsworth to arrive as well. They ordered the same as we had but in greater quantity. A good thing for the appeared to be starving. Between the two of them they demolished their plates of sandwiches. After enjoying desserts of raspberry pavlovas and strawberry cheesecakes, I suggested we retire to our individual rooms for a bit of rest and reconvene at four in our suite. Mellie readily agreed. To Hollingsworthâs credit, he didnât so much as smirk.
Two hours later, a more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed group met in our sitting room.
âWho should report first?â I asked.
âYou, darling,â Robert suggested.
âAll right.â I popped open my notebook and shared everything Mellie and I had learned, with her occasionally chiming in. Once I was done with my recitation, Robert and Hollingsworth agreed that Thérèse knew why Broussard was so eager to acquire her husbandâs business.
âItâs important we find out,â Robert said.
âYes, it is.â I already had some ideas as to how to go about it. In the meantime, we needed to hear what Robert had found out. âWhy donât you go next?â
âMy first order of business was to find Pierre Delacroix, Broussardâs valet. The most logical place to find more about him was the building where Broussardâs apartment was located. I hoped to find someone who knew him.
